We as a chapter enjoy working with other sororities, fraternities, and the greater Greenville community for community service and philanthropy. Participating in everything from relay races to dance competitions is always a fun way to support other Panhellenic philanthropies- and we're always proud to place in these competitions as we often do. Furman is a small school with a tight Greek community that makes supporting various philanthropies easy and has been very beneficial to our own chapter events.
Reading Is Fundamental
As a chapter we are so proud to be supporting Reading is Fundamental (also known as RIF), an organization committed to a literate America where all children have the opportunities that literacy provides, and other very worthwhile charities throughout the school year. Duncan Chapel Elementary is our primary local philanthropy. Our members are passionate and dedicated to going to their after-school programs and helping students with reading and writing. We work with kids from grades first through fourth, all while making genuine connections and bonds with the children we interact with.
Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation
In addition to supporting our national philanthropy, Reading Is Fundamental, we support the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. The mission of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation is to support the lifetime development of women through the funding of educational programs, financial assistance, and preservation of Kappa heritage. The foundation provides over 200-300 scholarships a year to members nationwide and includes a scholarship that pays for 75% of your yearly college tuition for your time as an undergraduate. By raising money for our foundation, we are able to contribute to the scholarships, aid, and other activities that the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation supports.
In the spring of 2017, we started our new main spring fundraiser, Grilled Cheese With KKGs. This event is an all-you-can-eat style buffet of grilled cheese sandwiches, made by our own Furman Catering Company. Along with a variety of grilled cheese options, we serve chips, cookies, and drinks and provide live entertainment from Furman's own women's acapella group, The Belles.
In the fall of 2017, we also revamped our philanthropy events by hosting multiple small ones throughout the semester. We started our new main fall event, Lemonade for Literacy, where we have a bake sale in front of the library and sell homemade baked goods and lemonade. We also had a raffle for a week for a brand new Yeti cooler and hosted a Chipotle fundraiser night where half of the proceeds go to our philanthropies.
Relay for Life
Relay for Life, a walk to help support cancer research, is very dear to Eta Alpha chapter's heart. We have a tradition of dedicated participation in this event. Every year we aim to raise $1000 to fund lifesaving cancer research. In the 2016 and 2017 school years, we raised over 200% of our goal and were the second-highest Greek fundraising team. Eta Alpha has had alumnae, mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and friends battle cancer. Relay for Life is a way for us to honor our loved ones and support Kappa sisters affected by cancer not only in our community but nationwide.
Fraternity and Sorority Events
We love to support our Greek brothers and sisters. We participate in events like Sigma Chi's Derby Days, Pi Kappa Phi's War of the Roses, Tau Kappa Epsilon's Tank a TKE, BeBold Month, Women Empowerment Month, and Greek Week. We also make sure to be present and support all other sorority philanthropy events and show our Panhellenic love.
